Day With(out) Art
The Emma Goldman Clinic will participate in the national Day With (out)
Art on Friday, December 1, 2006. All art work in the waiting room will
be covered in black cloths to acknowledge those who have died from
HIV/AIDS. The clinic is an HIV/AIDs testing and referral site.
Visual AIDs, the arts organization sponsoring Day Without Art,
states:
(DWA) began on December 1st 1989 as the national day of
action and mourning in
response to the AIDS crisis. To make the public aware
that AIDS can touch everyone,
and inspire positive action, some 800 U.S. art and AIDS
groups participated in the first
Day Without Art, shutting down museums, sending staff
to volunteer at AIDS services,
or sponsoring special exhibitions of work about AIDS.
Since then, Day With(out) Art
has grown into a collaborative project in which an
estimated 8,000 national and
international museums, galleries, art centers, AIDS
Service Organizations, libraries, high
schools and colleges take part.
"Participating in Day With (out) Art is a privilege for us," states
Karen Kubby, Executive Director of the Emma Goldman Clinic. "10% of our
gynecology clients are coming for HIV testing and/or referral services.
This is up from 9% last year. We feel it is important to stay involved
with awareness activities and prevention services."
