Project Pharmacy Offers Information on Access to Emergency Contraception in Iowa

The Emma Goldman Clinic is proud to announce its participation in Project Pharmacy.  Project Pharmacy is a campaign working to assure access and availability of emergency contraception from pharmacies in Iowa.  The campaign includes education initiatives to better inform the public, pharmacists and physicians about emergency contraception.  Project Pharmacy can be found on the web at: http://www.projectpharmacy.org

Project Pharmacy partners include the Emma Goldman Clinic, NOW chapters in Des Moines and Iowa City, the University of Iowa’s Law Students for Choice, and Iowa Planned Parenthood Affiliate League (PP of East Central Iowa, PP of Greater Iowa, PP of Nebraska/Council Bluffs and PP of Southeast Iowa).

Project Pharmacy has many elements, all of which are accessible on the web page.

  • Results of a pharmacy survey conducted by Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa.  This survey has a “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” coding system, allowing individuals to search for their local pharmacy and find out whether or not pharmacists at that location will dispense emergency contraception.
  • Consumer tips on how to be an effective self advocate when attempting to access emergency contraception.
  • Information on how to get involved in the ongoing survey process.

Emergency contraception is an effective and safe second chance at birth control.  It prevents pregnancy, yet does not harm or interfere with an already established pregnancy.  Emergency contraception is available at the Emma Goldman Clinic

“We are very excited about being a part of this statewide collaboration,” stated Karen Kubby, Executive Director of the Emma Goldman Clinic.  “It strengthens all of our educational programming.  Project Pharmacy is a great opportunity for reproductive health care providers and advocacy groups to join together to be one voice in the state of Iowa about access to emergency contraception.  We hope individuals will access our web site and want to get involved with Project Pharmacy.”
