"Voices of Women in Agriculture":
A Celebration of International Women's Day

There will be a celebration of International Women's Day on Monday, March 6 starting at 7pm in Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.  This event is a screening of three films and a discussion led by Women, Food and Agriculture Executive Director Denise O'Brien.

Organizations from the Iowa City and The University of Iowa communities who are partnered to organize this event include the United Nations Association, Emma Goldman Clinic, Women's Resource and Action Center, City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission, and the UI Center for Human Rights.

Three short films will be shown at this program.  One will highlight women farmers in Niger in their attempt to reclaim land left barren from draught; the second focuses on farm women in Senegal and their poultry project that increases their communities economic vitality; and the third, called Voices of Iowa Farm Women, uses oral histories of Iowa farm women in their efforts to remain on the farm and their use of alternatives to conventional farming practices that have allowed them to stay on the farm.

"Women have played and will continue to play a critical role in successful agricultural in Iowa and around the world.  This program will allow participants to learn more specifics of women's contributions to farm life and the agricultural economy globally," stated Denise O'Brien, Executive Director of Women, Food and Agriculture, a non-profit organization based in Iowa.

Refreshments will be served. For more information or to request an accommodation to attend this event, call Nittaya at (319) 337-7290.
