Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacteria
Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United
States, with 4 million new cases each year. It is especially prevalent among teenagers and
young adults. It frequently occurs along with gonorrhea infections (one-fourth of men and
two-fifths of women with gonorrhea also have chlamydia).
Symptoms: may not appear for long periods of time, or may never appear
In Men: painful burning sensation during urination, watery or milky discharge
from the penis
In Women: abnormal vaginal discharge, irregular
vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain accompanied by nausea and fever, painful or frequent
urination
Women are less likely to exhibit any symptoms at all; therefore, it is important to have
bacterial culture tests done during pelvic exams if you suspect that you might be
infected.
Treatment: antibiotics such as doxycycline or tetracycline
If untreated: women can develop pelvic inflammatory disease and other infections that can
lead to the loss of the ability to have children
