Abortion Services

In accordance with Iowa’s current laws, abortion is available up to the detection of cardiac activity, with exceptions as permitted under state law. The Emma Goldman Clinic offers procedural and medication abortion services within that timeframe.‍

We believe that every woman has the right to determine the outcome of her pregnancy regardless of her age, marital status, race, or income.

Walk-in Services

Every day we provide free services for women from all over Iowa and neighboring states. For many women finding the funds for services is a tremendous obstacle. A woman's ability to pay is often limited by income, no credit, a dangerous home situation or the inability to use family insurance.

About Us

Mission Statement

The Emma Goldman Clinic is a not-for-profit independent organization founded in 1973 by a group of women driven by feminist ideals.  We exist to empower people of all gender and sexual identities in all life stages through the provision of quality reproductive health care that includes abortion services, gynecology services, safer sex promotion, and active education. We promote respectful, client-centered and participatory health care through informed decision making, client rights, advocacy and expansion, and support of pregnancy choices.

We strive to provide an environment in which diversity is acknowledged and celebrated. We are actively committed to staff diversity in employment policies and practices. We strive to increase economic, geographic, structural, and language accessibility for the clients we serve through fundraising, outreach, and advocacy.

We offer non-judgmental, quality health care services. Our goals are inspired by our belief in the larger ideals of feminist philosophy: political, economic, and social equality.

Promoting Self-Health

Setting Standards for Care
We offer all people comprehensive information about their health concerns and treatment options, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their own care. Once someone experiences this type of respectful, client-centered care, we believe they will expect the same standard from all health care providers for themselves, their friends, and their families. In this way, we help make health care providers more responsive to the needs of their diverse clients and elevate universal standards of care.

Self-Cervical/Self Testicular and Self-Breast/Chest Exams
We promote regular self-exams as a tool for learning and monitoring what is normal and healthy for one’s own body. While this does not replace the need for routine exams from a health care provider, it is another way people can take responsibility for their health and increase bodily autonomy.

Patient Rights in Abortion and Gynecology Services

We promote and protect patient rights across all reproductive, wellness and gynecological services. This includes the right to be fully informed about medical diagnoses, procedures, possible complications, and aftercare; information about medications and side effects; the right to read and copy all medical records; the right to confidentiality; the right to have a patient advocate or support person; and the right to become an informed participant in your own care by having all questions answered in accessible, understandable language.

Emma Goldman Clinic’s position as a leader in feminist and community-based health care is a legacy we carry forward with pride. This means advocating for reproductive and sexual health needs—from the exam room to Capitol Hill.

We acknowledge that people of all genders are capable of understanding and evaluating information about their own bodies and health. Everyone belongs at the center of decisions about their care. For this reason, we strive to promote patients’ rights throughout all our services. These rights include:

  • Complete and accurate information about diagnosis, procedures, and possible complications
  • Information about medications and side effects
  • Access to all medical records
  • Confidentiality
  • A client advocate or support person
  • Non-judgmental, gender-affirming, trauma-informed health care

Every patient has the right to become an informed participant in their own care. We want people to feel empowered by the information they gain and through the choices they make.

Challenging Medical Practices

Breast/Chest Implants
The Clinic assisted a client through the maze of medical transport regulations so their bio-medical tissue could be entered as evidence in a class-action lawsuit against implant manufacturers.

Norplant
When Norplant was released as a “latest and greatest” method of birth control, the Clinic made the decision not to offer it. The reason was two-fold: first, insufficient research had been conducted regarding its side effects and removal; second, legislators and law enforcement officials proposed uses that could lead to coercive, mandated birth control—policies that would disproportionately impact young people, low-income individuals, and communities of color.
The Clinic is opposed to legislated or coercive birth control and refuses to participate in practices that undermine bodily autonomy.

Advocacy

Legislators and Regulatory Boards
We work with elected officials and regulatory agencies at every governmental level to ensure fair, equitable treatment of people in reproductive and sexual health policy.

Affiliations
The Emma Goldman Clinic collaborates closely with other health care providers throughout the region. We are also affiliated with national membership organizations including the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and Abortion Care Network (ACN). These partnerships ensure we remain informed, engaged, and effective in our advocacy efforts. They also provide training, education and best practices for the provision of abortion and reproductive health care.

Access

The Clinic seeks to improve each person’s ability to make choices about their reproductive and sexual health. Beyond the right to legal abortion, true choice also depends on access and affordability. Every day, we serve people from across Iowa and neighboring states. For many, finding the funds for services is a significant barrier—often limited by low income, lack of credit, unsafe home environments, or the inability to use family insurance.

The Emma Goldman Clinic deProsse Access Project includes:

  • Half-price gynecology services for teens
  • Discounted services for students
  • Free pregnancy testing and options counseling
  • Reduced-fee abortion services for people living on lower incomes
  • Supportive services for victims/survivors of rape or incest
